3D Technologies, Design Wales Forum Residency, 2014

Design Wales Forum offered four residencies for contemporary makers to develop and create new work using haptic modelling software (Freeform) and 3D printing technologies.

During the residency I gained an understanding of what 3D technologies were and how they could fit into my practice. I scanned my drawings and objects to create works in a variety of materials. I was particularly interested in the CNC milling machine, I liked its precision and could see how it would assist me in mould making, plinths or models in plaster or wood.

I found designing and creating 3D works using the Freeform software challenging. It is another way of thinking as it has no limitations and it is free of gravity. I work best when I am handling and responding to materials as I am making. I learned new skills in a short space of time with the support of experts in their field which was an enriching experience.
